March Schedule

Here is the March Schedule. We usually train one weekend of the March Break. This year we will be training the first weekend and not the second weekend. We keep our regular evening trainings as we have more space in the evening when Artistic Gymnastics trains in the morning and there are no evening recreational classes.

Please let your coaches know if you will be away during the March Break. If the numbers will be low we may combine classes or only have one coach rather than two (for those groups that have two coaches).

Also note that during the March Break the viewing area may be closed after 5:00pm. The tumblers will be ushered in an out after 5:00pm at the front sliding glass doors.

OGC Interclub Tumbling Invitational

Congratulations to all of the OGC's Interclub level tumblers and demonstrators who participated in this past weekends Winter Wonderland Interclub Tumbling Invitational. Thank you to our judges and to our guests from Quinte Bay Gymnastics Club, Sincoe Gliders Gymnastics Club and to Scarborough Gym Elites for coming out to the competition.

With the Winter Wonderland theme we had inflatable snowmen, snow globes, hot chocolate and lots of toques. Thank you to everyone who got into the theme.

TU 1st Ontario Cup DRAFT Schedule

Here is the schedule for the 1st Ontario Cup for Tumbling. This schedule is a DRAFT and there will be another one coming out but what will likely not change is the order of the events. It is possible so still keep things open. The 1st Ontario Cup is always a challenge to schedule as athletes keep changing their minds as to what levels they will compete in which makes scheduling hard especially if the athlete competes in more than one event.

Hope this helps you plan your upcoming weekend. This draft schedule is almost two weeks ahead of the competition. It's early!

Closer to the competition we will post the Final Schedule and directions but most of you can Map Quest or GPS your way to the competition. The 1st Ontario Cup for Trampoline & Tumbling will be at Bill Crothers Secondary School, 44 Main Street, Unionville, Ontario, L3R 2E4.

We're in there.

Jack won a silver medal for one of his finals passes. There were medals for prelims, and each of the finals passes. I bit different than we are used to.

Jack McGarr represented the OGC at the British Open Tournament for Tumbling and Acrobatics in early December. Jack rounded out his competition competing in both the Acrobatic competition and the tumbling event. Jack represented the OGC well capturing a silver medal in the final round. Jack looked strong in rather hit and miss group of tumblers. Well done Jack!

Quebec Competition

OGC Heading to Quebec Tumbling Qualifier

Just a note on the Quebec tumbling competition that we plan to attend.

Location: St Hyacinthe (just south of Montreal, 20 minutes)
Hotel: Hotel Deseigneurs (really nice, we've stayed there several times)
Schedule (draft):
February 23rd, Thursday (train in the afternoon at Voltigeurs Club maybe)
Thursday night do something on our own, go to Montreal, hang out at the pool,
February 24th, Friday train in the morning or early afternoon, help set up for competition
February 25th, Saturday and February 26th, Sunday compete
You will be free to go after your athlete competes (to go skiing or visiting Montreal or shopping or home).

A fun OGC all Provincial and National level tumblers.

Note: If you feel that the Thursday departure date is too early for you that is fine. You can come up on Friday or fly in for the weekend. Either way I really hope you are willing to attend as this will be a really exciting event for the athletes. Heck if you compete on Sunday then you could come up Saturday night and drive home on Sunday. I am leaving the schedule very loose so that each family can make the weekend work for them.
Note: That there will be no training for Provincial and National Level tumbles Thursday through Sunday that weekend in Oakville if you choose not to attend.

More details to come but I wanted you to be in the know about the dates.

It's like Easterns but for everyone. No need to qualify. Just go and have a great time.

If you are still waiting on a Provincial or National level women's tumbling leotard from Dreamlight. They are set to arrive on Monday, January 16th.

Abs for Cash

I have mentioned a new idea for getting us all in shape in the Tumbling and Acro Programs. It's called Abs for Cash.

We are essentially having a 'Best Ab's competition. Each contestant puts in a twoonie and the winner gets half the pot whereas the other half goes towards buying more ankle weights for the gym. Ankle weights are always in need and often disappear to the bottom of pits, under mats and fall apart easily as they take pretty rough treatment.

There are five categories of competition:

Athletes Girls/Women 17 or Under
Athletes Boys/Men 17 or Under
Athletes Women 18 and over/Coaches/Mom's
Athletes Men 18 and over/Coaches/Dad's
Over 50 years (one category)

We do not need before photos but if you would like to submit them you can. I have already started logging photos of myself to show the ultimate transformation from Christmas Chubby to March 1st Muscle Machine.

On (or around) March 1st we will have an Ab'stravaganza where all participants are expected to show up with a t-shirt that has a hole cut out where your abs are so that we can see the rectus abdominis that you have chiselled over the two months of effort.

We all have New Year's Resolutions of getting fit, eating better, and leading a healthy lifestyle so that we can be a role model for our kids, our parents and our friends. Now is your opportunity and you are not alone. I will be posting my efforts. We will be supplying you with ideas on ab exercises you can do at home with little or no equipment so that achieving leaner abs is possible for all.

Let's go OGC. Show the rest of the community that we have great abs (they're just wearing a jacket right now).

To register simply submit your twoonie in a sealed envelope with your name and category on it to Don by the end of January.

If you find errors please point them out to me as I make them honestly and with 104 athletes in the program, who have over 208 parents asking me questions I sometimes do things in a bit of a rush and miss a detail here and there. January Competitions

There has been some confusion as to who is competing in what competition this month. Here is a clarification:

January 22nd at the OGC
There will be an Interclub Competition for those OGC athletes who are in Developmental 1, 2 or 3. Please recall that for an athlete to be eligible to compete tumblers must be 8 years old by the end of December 31st, 2012. So your child could be 7 now but 8 by the end of the year. Those who will still be 7 or under can perform as demonstrators.
The Interclub competition will run between 1:00 and 5:00pm at the OGC and be run in a regular format where athletes compete down in the gym and parents are up behind the glass. We will march athletes up and through the viewing area and present awards up in the viewing area. Most of you will recall this format from the previous years.

On this day the Provincial and National tumblers have an altered schedule. Please see the previous post.

I think on the Event schedule that was handed out in our Fall meetings it says there is a Mock Meet on January 23rd. That is a Monday. We are not doing a big Mock Meet this year with other clubs, just some practice competitions within each group's own training time. That's all.

January 28th/29th 1st Ontario Cup
No schedule yet so plan to compete at anytime between 8:00am and 7:00pm in Unionville

The December schedule is on its way. We have a Director's Meeting at the club on Monday, December 5th to finalize the holiday training schedule. The December schedule will be posted on Monday night. For the time being all classes are running as per the regular schedule.

Please note that Tumbling will likely be training Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday of the two weeks that the athletes have off school. Afternoons and evenings.

Day 1 World Age Group Championships

Today Kezia Allen and Savannah Wepf pulled off strong tumbling passes at the World Age Group Trampoline & Tumbling Championships in Birmingham, England.

Kezia was dealing with a sore ankle from a short landing during training and Savannah was recovering from a sprained ankle that she suffered on Monday evening in the hotel. Both girls pushed past the pain and delivered two routines.

Kezia placed 23rd and Savannah placed 24th, point one behind Kezia. Congratulations to both on competing in their first World Championships. Way to go OGC!

For all of those confused parents out there here is ALL the Tumbling Program information you will need.

Congratulations to all the tumblers who were offered spots in the Oakville Gymnastics Club Tumbling Program for the 2011/2012 season. We do appreciate your dedication, commitment and loyalty towards the tumbling program.

The One Year Contract Policy: As you know the Tumbling program offers your child a space in the program for one year and at the end of each season we do ask all of our athletes to “ReTryout”. By implementing the ‘Re-Tryout’ and ‘Tryout’ protocols we are not trying to be mean or unsupportive of those athletes that we have been working with and developing over the previous year (or years). Our program is a competitive program with a limited number of spaces. We are simply trying to ensure that those athletes who are the most deserving of a spot on the team are receiving those spots. If at some point we do ask your child to leave the program this may be thought of as a good thing allowing the athlete the opportunity to explore other sports where he/she may be more suited physically, mentally or socially.

Summer Attendance: During the summer session we expect 50% attendance as a minimum. We would prefer that your child attends 100% of their scheduled classes but we understand summer schedules are far more diverse and we would hope that kids take the time to enjoy summer camps, weeks at the cottage and time with family. Please send an e-mail to your athlete’s coach with the dates that your child will not be at tumbling. Low attendance in some groups on specific weeks may allow us to accommodate other athletes who have summer training conflicts and permit them to make the minimum number of training hours.

Fall/Winter/Spring Attendance: During the school year we expect 80% attendance as a minimum. Obviously the less your athlete trains the less they will progress and the less they will be prepared for competition. It is in your best interest to have your athlete at the gym as much as possible.

Violation of Attendance Minimums and Removal from the Program: We cannot hold spots for athletes who do not attend the program. If you have schedule conflicts that will prevent your athlete from reaching the minimum attendance requirement but wish to remain as part of the tumbling program please e-mail the Tumbling Program Directors outlining your situation.

OGC Code of Conduct: We have created a specific code of conduct for our athletes while part of the team, mostly for traveling with us while not with a parent. As we travel to competitions you will see this document and if you have any concerns with it at that time we can address them then.

Schedules: Summer Schedules and Fall/Winter/Spring schedules have been distributed. We understand the logistical difficulties that families encounter by receiving these schedules in June as summer camp registration and vacations need to be booked several months in advance. Please note that we create our schedule with careful consideration. We realize that there will be conflicts and we have outlined how we are attempting to provide concessions for these conflicts. Also note that due to the ever evolving space usage of the gym we may find it necessary to change a scheduled class temporarily or permanently depending on the situation. We cannot foresee these situations but we will try to provide you with as much notice as possible prior to changes.

Tumbling Program Weeks Off during the Summer: Note that these change each year as we need to address the competition schedule that is also ever changing. We will try to let you well in advance so that you can plan vacations/camps/etc.

Active Rest: During the rest periods we expect athletes to remain active. We give the tumblers a checklist of activities to do during their off time in order to keep them fit.

Maternity Leave: Amanda will be taking over the National Group coaching for Niki as of November 1^st. Wendy will be taking the Tuesday night Provincial DC training but Amanda will continue to coach the DC group the rest of the week. Sunday Provincial DC group will move to 11:30 to 1:30pm. Sunday Developmental 2 group will move to 1:30 to 3:30pm so that Amanda can coach the National group at 3:30pm. Developmental 3 group coaching will be taken over by Jane Kirwan, our new coach from Ireland. These changes will remain in effect until June 30^th, 2012.

Nutrition: We will post some nutrition information on the blog at some point to assist you with meal planning for effective trainings and competitions so keep you eye on the blog.

Water Bottles Tumblers ONLY: We have requested that the tumblers be permitted to bring water bottles into the gym and kept in a box under the tumbling bulletin board so that athletes do not have to cross the gym to get to the water fountains. Only OGC Tumblers will be permitted this. Please send your child with a reusable water bottle for all trainings.

Viewing Area Closure: During the summer months and on some holidays the viewing area may be closed in the evening so there will be no parent viewing. Your child will be let in at the sliding glass doors at the front of the club and be ushered out at the end of their session. When the viewing area is closed no one is permitted in the gym lobby for safety and liability reasons. Our apologies for the inconvenience that this might cause. If there is an emergency and you need to contact us inside the gym we ask that you bang on the back door of the gym to try and get our attention. There is usually someone standing in that corner by the trampolines preparing to take a turn so we will here you knocking.

Individual Parent Meetings: We offer individual parent meetings as we or you feel they are necessary. If you have individual questions that pertain to your specific situation we ask that you not address these in a public forum but leave it to an e-mail or individual meeting.

Chain of Command: Speak to your child’s coach(es) directly for anything you may have questions about. Then you may speak to Don and Niki. If we are not able to help you then you can speak to Wayne Hussey the COO. If you have a question about an event/competition DO NOT contact Gymnastics Ontario directly. DO NOT contact the host club of an event directly. If you have a question address it through the coach(es) and we will ask GO or the event host for you as your question is likely one that other’s have.

Sponsorship: Athletes are able to search for sponsors to offset the costs of training and competitions. The OGC has created a sponsorship package for all competitive athletes. Please enquire if you are interested in sponsorship.

Fundraisers: We do two fundraisers that we try to keep easy and simple. This year we will NOT be doing juice box sales. We will be sending out information on the Family Fun Night and a raffle for Maple Leaf Tickets.

The Competitions.

National Tumblers: Need to attend an international meet at some point in order to qualify to the Canadian National Team. We will speak directly to those who individuals who this pertains to.

Competitive Wear: We change our competitive singlet and shorts/leotard every two years. More information will be coming very soon about this. This is our second year with a new suit so most of you should already have it. Please be sure to have your athlete try their suit on to ensure that it still fits. Tracksuits will remain the same this year. If you don’t have a tracksuit let us know immediately. There is a possibility for swapping or purchasing a lightly used tracksuit from another athlete. Information will be distributed via e-mail regarding a Swap or Exchange Day.

OGC Tumbling T-shirts: $12 for the blue or grey t-shirts.

OGC Optional Apparel: We plan to make some hooded sweatshirts, sweat pants and other OGC apparel available for purchase this fall as well stay tuned to the blog for more information on these items.

2011 Canada Cup Tumbling

Congratulations to the OGC National level tumblers who competed at the 2011 Canada Cup in Airdrie, Alberta during the last week of July. The OGC had a total of 9 national tumblers competing in 4 different categories. Top placing went to Michael Chaves in the Youth Men's tumbling division where he captured the gold. Michael also won the Canadian National Championships in May and is hoping to make the move to Senior in 2012. Luke Mackinnon moved up to the Youth Men's tumbling division and was able to capture the bronze medal behind British Columbia's Kyle Carrahger.

In the Novice Men's 15 and over category Jack McGarr captured a solid 2nd place after landing four smooth tumbling passes in a row. Steven Tucker made the jump to the national level from Provincial A stream and earned a birth in the final round. Steven landed in 5th place. Erik Polasek also moved up to the Novice Men's 15 and over category but with a hand touch on his double back tuck in prelims wasn't able to capture a space in the finals and placed 6th overall.

In the Novice Women's tumbling, 11-14 years age division, Savannah Wepf, the 2011 Canadian National Championships gold medalist, had to settle for bronze behind teammate Kezia Allen, 2nd place, and a tumbler from the USA who captured the gold medal. Though suffering some fears surrounding performing her double pike in competition for the first time, Kezia managed to pull it around to her feet to capture the top Canadian finish in this category and achieve a personal best Finals round score. New comer Stephanie Milligan was able to make her way into the final round of competition and with clean passes found herself in 4th place at her first national level competition.

In the Senior Men's category Jonathan Meehan dropped back to fourth spot after placing second at his two previous national events. Despite Jonathan's fourth place finish he captured his personal best score in the preliminary round which helped him retain his 2nd place rank on the Canadian team. Jonathan is set to participate in the World Championships in November but still has a World Cup in Germany and at National Team selection camp to attend prior to being placed definitively on the World's team. Good luck to Jonathan over the next few months as he prepares for World Championships.

The OGC not only had the largest contingent of tumblers at the 2011 Canada Cup they also captured more medals than any other club and had the most athletes attain the Canadian standard to attend the World Age Group Championships (the worlds for tumblers 18 and under) which will take place the week after the World Championships in Birmingham, England. Savannah Wepf, Kezia Allen, Luke Mackinnon and Michael Chaves all attained the high Canadian standard score which permits them to be considered for the Canadian Age Group Team. Good luck to these four tumblers as they prepare for their international competition as well.

The OGC Tumblers took some time to visit Banff and make friends with international athletes who were attending the Canada Cup. 8 countries participated in the 2011 Trampoline & Tumbling Canada Cup making this competition a truly international experience for the athletes.

Way to go OGC!

Gym Closing Summer Months

Please note that the Oakville Gymnastics Club closes the viewing area at 7:30pm Monday to Thursday and at 5:00pm on Friday.

Some groups train past the viewing area and office closure time. Parents are to collect their children at the sliding glass doors at the designated time for the completion of the child's class. Coaches will usher the class to the sliding glass doors to ensure a safe pick up.

If you need to leave early please be sure to let the coach know in advance.

We will send an email with emergency pick up procedures.

Here is the schedule and the registration list for the Scarborough Gym Elites Retro Summer Trampoline & Tumbling Invitational. Please be sure to check the level your tumbler is registered in so that you can arrive on time for this competition.

This competition is very relaxed and fun so please show up in your best Retro Summer outfits: Hawaiian shirts, grass skirts, water wings, etc. Try to have as much fun with this competition as possible.

Please note that the September schedule is a DRAFT schedule and may be altered slightly in the fall.

The schedules have been given intense consideration. Changes to the times to suit your own personal schedule will not be possible.

Yes, we realize that you are getting these schedules only three weeks before the summer begins but they are very similar to last summer and with all schedules archived here on the blog you were able to see what our previous schedules were like in the past.

Remember you are expected to attend at least 50% of all summer training. If you are unable to participate in the program due to scheduling please let us know but it is unlikely that accommodations will be possible. We have a long waiting list for the program and we have taken more than our program model allows in order to provide as many athletes with the opportunity to be part of our tumbling program.

We are happy to say that all tumblers who were part of the 2010/2011 season who were seeking a spot on the 2011/2012 Tumbling Team were provided with a space. Congratulations to all on making the team and thank you for your cooperation, effort and support over the past year.

Athlete Packages will be available for pick up this evening at the OGC.

Jonathan Meehan captured his second SILVER medal this year as a Senior tumbler. Jonathan captured a surprise silver medal at Elite Canada in Trois Rivieres earlier this year and was the favourite to capture another at the National Championships in PEI. After the preliminary round he was in a tie for fourth but managed to delivered two solid final routines in order to move up to second. Alex Seifert of Alberta sits miles ahead of the Senior Men's field performing huge passes with ease as the veteran senior. Congratulations to Jonathan on his successful National Championships. Jonathan is vying for a spot on the Senior Tumbling Team for the up coming World Championships in Birmingham, England.

Michael Chaves was able to keep the Youth National Gold in the OGC. Last year the OGC's Jonathan Meehan captured the Youth Men's Tumbling Gold. This year the competition was really close with Michael just edging past Sean Robertson of the Burlington BG's. Michael managed to capture the score he needed to qualify to the World Age Group Championships as well. Congratulations to Michael, National Champion.

Luke Mackinnon captured the Novice 15+ Men's tumbling GOLD in Charlottetown successfully defending his 2010 title by delivering his strongest performance of the year. Luke is finally back on top of his game and laying down some of the most solid tumbling in the country. Luke also managed to make the qualification score to attend the World Age Group Championships. Luke competed for Canada when he was 12 years old and is looking forward to returning to the world stage as a 16 year old. Way to go Luke!
Jack McGarr, had a strong prelims and gave his finals passes just a little too much gas taking a fall on a double back pike. Despite finding himself off the podium Jack is determined to make a strong come back at the next Canadian National team qualification event in July.

National GOLD at her first National Championships, Savannah Wepf won the Novice 11-14 tumbling category. Savannah, originally a member of the OGC's Women's Artistic Gymnastics program transfered to tumbling in 2010 and has had a successful year. Savannah also achieved a high score that permits her to represent Canada at the upcoming World Age Group Championships in Birmingham, England in November. Congratulations to Savannah, National Champion.
Also, competing in the Novice 11-14 category was Kezia Allen who landed just outside the medals.

Dezember Treleaven recently transfered to the OGC Tumbling Team along with her sister, Dakota, who captured the Novice 15+ Gold medal at the Ontario Championships. This time around Dezember managed to capture her first medal of the year, a BRONZE, at the National Championship. Congratulations to Dezember on her national podium finish. Dakota Treleaven and Lauren Rotolo also of the Oakville Gymnastics Club tumbled in this category but were shut out of the medals despite strong performances.

The Tumbling Team competition runs on a unique format where four athletes from each province are chosen to perform one pass. The top three passes are added together to create a total score. Whichever province has the largest score wins. Each four person team is comprised of a Senior, a Youth, an Open and a Novice 11-14 tumbler. If one of these levels is not available then they take a Novice 15+ tumbler onto the team. DD scores are adjusted to make the levels more comparable rather than a huge degree of difficulty score from the Senior counting for so much.

The Ontario Women's Tumbling team captured the GOLD medal edging out Saskatchewan and BC. Savannah Wepf, of the OGC, was part of the Ontario Women's Tumbling Team. Congratulations Savannah.

The Ontario Men's Tumbling team had to settle for the SILVER medal loosing to the strong Alberta team. The OGC's Jonathan Meehan and Michael Chaves were part of the Ontario Men's Tumbling Team.

Summer Schedule WEEKS OFF

Though we do not have a set summer schedule yet we will have one very soon.

Please look at the Summer Schedule archived here on the blog in the months of July and August 2010. The schedule will be similar. We try not to train on Fridays and there are definitely no Saturday or Sunday trainings for most groups.

We do take three weeks off.
They are the following for the summer of 2011:

June 27th to July 1st
August 22nd to 26th
August 29th to September 2nd

In the Summer we expect a minimum of 50% attendance. Please try to book summer camps during the weeks off. Please let your coach know when you will be away in the summer.

Please notet that on Sunday, June 5th we will be running our ReTryouts for tumblers who are presently in the tumbling program. I have posted a list here of athletes who are seeking to gain readmittance into the tumbling program for another season. If your name (or athlete's name) is on this list but you are not planning on coming back please let Don know via email.

If you are presently in the program but are not planning on attending next season you do not need to attend the Retryout. No regularly scheduled classes will take place on Sunday, June 5th. Only the ReTryout sessions will take place.

Athletes are divided into groups based on where we preceive they will fit best for the next season. Because you are testing with a certain group doesn't mean that you will necessarily compete in at the leve of the group you are allocated to but rather the group dynamic may be a better fit (age, skills, mental focus and maturity, etc.).

During the ReTryout athletes will be asked to perform some basic tumbling and be given some physical testing.

National Group tumblers will have an Interview style ReTryout and do not need to be prepared to tumble. An Interview list will be posted here on the blog before Sunday with times for the the individual tumbler's interview so that you do not need to be at the gym for the entire 3:30 to 5:00pm session.

More details about next season: hours, schedule, coaches, expectations will be posted here by the week's end so that you can make an informed decision if you are invited back to the program.

Please note that some athletes may not be invited back to the Tumbling program for the 2011/2012 season. There are several factors that we take into consideration. Factors such as: commitment and dedication to the program on the part of both the athlete and the parent, level of success in the program, attendance, behaviour, etc.
Please note that if we invite you to leave the program we will have justifications as to why and you are welcome to meet with the coaches at that time to find out what those justifications are. If we don't feel that this sport is the optimal sport for your child we will let you know. This should be thought of as a good thing as your child may be better suited for another sport and we want to be completely honest with you about your child's prospects in the sport.
